Ecclesiastical Installations

After being inspired by the artist Christo and his installation, “The Gates”, in Central Park, 2005, I wanted to do larger pieces and became interested in installations in churches. I began to think about what it would mean to combine art and worship. My first thought was that it needed to be participatory. By that I mean art is not just simply viewed in a church while worshipping but the viewer is connected at some participatory level. It could be in the planning of the art, the making of the art, or in the creation of the art in the worship service itself. It could be in the stimulation of the senses in connection with the worship theme or experience. I was fortunate to belong to a church that allowed me the freedom to experiment with this concept. Each installation was centered around the liturgical calendar and was designed as a result of exploring the biblical passages and themes for that season.
